DenseLight announces entry into PON-component market

Singapore, 22 October 2003 - DenseLight Semiconductors Private Limited ("DenseLight"), already a global leader in the SLED market, announces its entry into PON (Passive Optical Network) optics, following many months of successful work and novel development, leading to several patents and products that are designed for mass manufacture and with a highly-competitive cost advantage.

The early failures in the global PON market-space are attributed to many reasons, among them the high cost of terminal devices at the OLT (Optical Line Termination) and the ONU (Optical Network Unit). DenseLight understands that mass-proliferation can only be enabled when devices at gigabit rates can be made at a cost that the consumers can afford, something made possible by its operations in Singapore, a recognized global high tech manufacturing hub with very competitive cost structures.

Since February 2003 DenseLight’s push for PON products has accelerated in pace and is now close to maturity. Experts with considerable experience on early PON programs in the USA and Japan, and great familiarity with PON components and deployment, spearheaded this work. Product development concentrated on the manufacturability of true synergistic integration of optical and RF bi-directional components. DenseLight will be releasing very soon prototyping results on this development effort and potentially the optical components have enhanced optical signal isolation as well as greatly-reduced manufacturing complexity, with RF signal-feeds for GPON, EPON, and BPON.

DenseLight’s CEO, Dr Yee-Loy Lam stresses, "PON is one of the key answers to fiber-starved FTTx access. For example, in Japan, access FTTH is now deployed at a rate of 70K units per month according to published figures, and is expected to increase exponentially in the coming year." Dr Lam also adds, "DenseLight recognizes the different markets (Japan, China, USA) and appreciates their individual requirements, and is developing specific solutions for each one of them. Many performance proofs have been made on our designs, which has resulted in several patents filings. We are confident of rolling out prototypes for sampling in the coming months, and we are already collaborating with a few strategic partners. It is an exciting time for DenseLight, which offers the best-in-class integrated optoelectronics, and has the capabilities to match its growth aspirations."

DenseLight’s VP of Sales and Marketing, Dr Lye-Hing Chua believes that, "now is the right time to introduce our PON-products to the market, especially after the positive and encouraging response we received at ECOC2003 (for our broad product line)".

DenseLight, headquartered in Singapore, provides total component solutions from design to volume manufacturing with fast response and flexibility. In addition to access photonics PON-components, other major products from DenseLight include best-in-class SLEDs, CWDM DFBs and integrated modules. DenseLight is a leading developer and manufacturer of Indium-Phosphide (InP) based optoelectronics, PIC and integrated photonics solutions. Its enabling technology of quantum-well-intermixing (QWI) provides some of these solutions. Currently, DenseLight’s products serve many customers across a broad spectrum of industries and application space.
